Betty White, the now not so neglected race car

Pulling the fuel cell line, no foam bits or anything, just nice clear fluid. Collected it in a clear container. Checked the fuel filter, could be blown through easily. All lines looked good, fuel came out was good. I ordered another Walbro fuel pump to replace the one in the car. It should be fine, but you never know. The only other thing beyond this is injectors. I'll probably replace the fuel filter anyway, though I don't see a need to. Anyway, car is up on jack stands on the trailer now, new fuel pump should be here by this Wednesday.

I should clarify, the pump installed now is the factory l28 pump. Anew version of it, but stock.

Ok, tomorrow is go time. Have the new pump and a new filter. Going to put both those on and see what goes. I'm not convinced yet, but we shall see.

Ah yes, the usual. I finally got the pump out and wouldn't you know it, the original pump is metric, the Walbro aftermarket is SAE. Consequently, the fittings from the old pump almost fit the new one, but not quite. One has 3/8 threads, one has 10 mm threads. And the new pump came with 3/8 fittings. That's fine on the incoming side, the fuel cell to pump is 3/8. But the rest of the line is Datsun, 5/16. So now I have to go see if the hardware store has what I need since all the specialty hose fitting stores are closed on Saturday. Either that or I weld up a 3/8 to 5/16 adapter like I have on the wagon. And even then, the way the pump is mounted I need a 90 degree off one end.

Oh the fun of Datsuns! Wish I had a lift, I'd just re-run the whole line in 3/8.

Ok, I hate cobbling things together, but it's flat out easier. Got a 1/8 npt 90 and a 5/16 nipple and 3/8 nipple. One more piece of hose to make the connection but it will be the easiest way to get the new pump in and tested.

So the fuel pressure is much better, but it was still running lean. I fiddled with the Motec and boom, got it happy again. The race car runs. And now, I'm going to put a modern EFI system on. The Motec certainly works, but I want something that can auto-correct and be tuned via laptop. Much easier than twiddling dials. Going with a Fishdog UA4C. Very cost effective, not as much stuff as the mainstream ecus, but it will work better than what I have, which should equate to enjoying more time with the race car.

That speeduino ECU is certainly cheap, and I have heard of them before.

I think once I get the wagon running, I will probably switch to a Link ECU.

Got my new ecu yesterday! But, being it's 110 again today, think I'm going to wait until the weekend to put it in. Think the holiday should only be a 100 high. That's much better than 110.

Now that I finally finished the axle for the wagon, Betty White has her winter hibernation chamber back! I need a bigger shop.

Alright, so I got the new helmet with HANS attachments and a HANS device from Speedway. Just test fitted them and my chest is too big! The helmet works, but the HANS device is right up against the helmet. Just doesn't fit well. Checking with the regs, there are apparently some other versions that are similar but much more adjustable.

So I took the race car to work this week since it was slow. That there's a 5 speed ka box with modified z bellhousing! Should be a lot better gear spread and stronger. Dropped off the driveshaft for shortening on Friday. Hopefully Murls will have it done by Wednesday. I did have to modify the crossmember a bit on the one side to clear the exhaust basically just cut a diamond, line through the side box. I've only had that transmission together for about a year. Just been waiting in the basement.

Lol, fuck you! It's not my prettiest work. Those were the original pictures, I cleaned it up a little after that and the subsequent modification to the one side since the exhaust hit the edge of the box on the side just barely. It's plenty strong, but way overkill and a bit large. The good news is it actually fits the KA mount quite well as it recesses a bit more than the stock Z tranny mount. I also painted it.

The mounting pad is further back on the KA trans, so the U shape of the altered mount points forwards.

I suppose that the tranny was resting on the cross member the way it was and that was why you had to do it that way.
