Re: WTB alt for a 78 620
adam. the IR alt swap literally takes less than a minute... Its two lengths of 2" wire and four spade connectors (unless you have a round plug, then its two butt connectors) Everything else is plug and play.... 720 alt is 60amp normally and drops right in....
I have a Z IR alt in my parts stash.

Re: WTB a STOCK IR alt for a 78 620
Only the 620 alt fits properly. Car or 720 alternators are larger diameter and sit very close to the idler arm just below it. You need a shorter belt and a 280z/zx lower rad inlet to move the rad hose up and to the rear out of the way. I also used a 720 block mount that lifts the alt. slightly. Still had to put the belt on the pulley first then put the mounting bolts in.
My Datsuns, like good friends, have never let me down. At least in any way that was not understandable and thus fixable.

Re: WTB a STOCK IR alt for a 78 620
the 720 alt is smaller, or so I thought.... I threw an 85 ST alt in my B I can measure my ST alt VS a older alt I have laying aruond and see if there's a huge different.
I was told before the 720 ones are smaller so they are a drop in affair. the 83 and 84 720 alts were also used in the early sentra, 310s, and i think one of the hl510s

Re: WTB a STOCK IR alt for a 78 620
The alt I put on the blue LZ 521 I had was from a KA.
Bolted in. It seemed like there was no movement.
As soon as I got a belt on it, there was more than enough room to tighten and remove the belt without issue.
Granted, I'm sure it fit better going from Z to KA.
Never tried to fit any different alt on to an L.

Re: WTB a STOCK IR alt for a 78 620
I had an alt I switched from my 720 to my 510 back in the day, worked fine. Pretty sure this one is smaller... 620s are a little different, but i'm pretty sure the 720 alts fit.
Adam... the alt in the red 720 KC 4x4 is brand new, go rape it and test fit it.

Re: WTB a STOCK IR alt for a 78 620
They will be similar size, plus there is nothing near it on the cars. The 620 has a frame rail with an idler arm poking up almost into the bottom of the alternator. I made one fit but it does not replace or drop into the place where the stock 35amp one was.izzo wrote:I had an alt I switched from my 720 to my 510 back in the day, worked fine.
