I used these instead of stock on my 1966 520. Not sure if they are legal where you are. These are DOT approved and only draw 10 amps each on brights turning on and 5 amps each continuous. No stock wiring changes needed, but I would go ahead and wire in relays for at least the high beam circuit and another for the low beam circuit. These are glass faced and closely match the curvature of the stock sealed beams. I would order an extra set of replacement bulbs other than the Hella's as the Hella's seam to not last long. Also your stock headlight plugs, plugs into these bulbs. I am using my stock wiring and plugs, but I have not actually run these lights using the stock Datsun plugs. I might set up a test with these lights and let them run say 8 hours on high beam and see if it melts the stock plug. I will edit this post after I run this test.

I did not see this thread, have you done your test yet?

I installed the 7" Hella headlights(without relays) with the standard 55/60 bulbs that come in the kit into my 68 C10. Within 5k miles both headlight connectors were completely melted. Just last week I installed replacement connectors and put them on relays too. Relays are easy, should have done it in the first place. But I, just like you read that they would be fine with stock connectors.

Relays did show a noticeable improvement in how bright they are. Now I really need to pull my guage cluster so I can access the headlight switch to check it for any signs of melting problems.

In hindsight, I would not even consider installing H4 lights without installing relays. I have another pair of these 7" lights waiting to go into my Landcruiser, but it's not going to happen until I can take the time to cleanly install relays also.

I have not done the test yet, probably wont be able to for about 30 more days do to eye surgeries.

After reading yello620's post I realized that it is not the amperage that will burn the plugs but the heat generated from the halogen light bulbs. I am going to go ahead and purchase the ceramic plugs for the halogen bulbs and wire in 2 relays to protect my wiring. I will do a write up when I do this.
