Really Ratty Rusty Ruby 510/miata

#1

Post by Indy510 »

I've been too busy to post on here lately. I still have the 2dr 710, but I finally sold the wagon a few months ago. As stupid as it sounds, I quickly spent all that money on the tools and parts needed to get my rusty 510 back on the road.

The only problem is the 510 looked like this in 2015, when I started the "re-build":

I knew I needed a donor chassis, so I looked into using a 1st or 2nd gen. Miata, S2000, Pontiac Solstice, or some exo-skeleton kit car

All of these options are at least 6-7" wider than a stock 510, so I made some relief cuts in the roof to bend out the roof pillars and widen the whole 510 three inches

I jammed some .75x1.5" square tube in the cross-braces between all 3 pillars:

Then I let it sit for 6 months, while working on the 710s:

I wasn't planning on using $400 taillights on this $50 car, but it helps that they're a lot wider than stock 510 tailights:

I decided to widen the headlight buckets too, but it took me forever to figure out the grill to headlight bezel ratio is 2:1

The patina is the only reason this car didn't go to the dump:

Then I took it all apart, so I could paint the 2dr 710, 2 years ago:

I think you mean the radness is the only reason it didn't go to the dump.

Yup, thats what he meant ;)

I kept wondering why the body is wide and things like the hood are too narrow, then I remembered Miata in the title. This should be pretty dang cool.
