So, what's the actual plan here?

for the dings that are kinda deep tap them out lightly with a hammer...

I got a hammer and dolly set off ebay for 10 bucks. It's shit, but it works. Just light taps... A light coat of filler, then sanded down to the body metall.. MMM! I wouldn't use filler on anything more than a quarter inch deep and thats pushing it... A skim coat over a large section or a whole panel then sanded smooth would yield super smooth but take a bit o time

Theory in body work
Bring up the lows(dents) take down the highs, when you have a panel to repair, always start by bringing up the lows(dents)first
The tap the highs down.
And for larger dents(may sound funny)as in a kick dent or... A plunger does wonders

Here is a example.

Looking at the convex curve(the most outer point on the right fender in this case)
where in concaves(the lowest point)
You will want to hammer the high(the part(looks from pic,may have been a binding hinge?)and hold the dolly on the low,Bumping it(yeh the terminology is bizzare sounding  )to make the substrate flow back to its former glory

The enemy of metal it fixing dents,is stretching the metal to far past its elasticity, hence shrinking happens(many times it can be avoided, but it happens).
