I strapped the new chain on the 036 and got about 1/2 way through the wood I had left when it suffered a pulmonary embolism. Not sure where the clot came from but it embedded in the lower ring and ruined the cylinder. If you can't breathe, you can't run. Parts are on order.

I guess its probably safe to discuss now, as i'm finally gettting over the trauma. I was down watering my fruit trees last week and got attacked by a mountain lion.




It silently crept out of the tall grass behind my shop and immediately went for my femoral artery. Clearly, an apex predator. It seemingly came out of nowhere but was somehow everywhere all at once. I somehow managed to subdue it. Brown dog and I tried for almost an hour to domesticate it, but it was hopeless. We had no choice but to relocate it to a friend's wildlife refuge (farm). God have mercy on the rodent population of Canyon County.

Oh man. Something’s going on. You’ve probably already said what and I just forgot. And, I love the snow. Much better than the tornadoes we got down here last night.

I was off by the timeline but it's definitely happening. Projected finish date is 5/23.

We prepped everything on Wednesday. It was below freezing and really windy so we hid out under the lean-to at the end of the shop. Precut all the joists and sheeting. Then built the 2 skids. I punched 2.5" holes at each end as grapple points if it ever needs to be moved.






This morning we recessed and leveled the blocks. The skids are there temporarily as a level surface.




The platform as you currently see it is upside-down. Brackets are in place to attach the skids before we flip it.
3/4" sheeting goes on top. R21 insulation fills the void.

Skids slipped out from underneath and attached. Base flipped over. Insulation and decking on.








Last 2 deck sheets are in place but not nailed until I run the drains. Need to get another load of lumber before we can proceed. All tucked under the tarps until work and weather permits further progress.

I guess I missed this post, when I posted about using railroad ties for the garden and bring in 3-way soil in them areas I was unsure of your soil quality, I also did not see you had tilled your garden area, if I had the room I would put more room between my rows.

Nice. Good idea on the insulation. When I enclosed a back porch at my last house I installed chicken wire on the bottom of the joists and laid the insulation in.


Is that wood treated or is that something you’ll do afterwards? Do y’all have to deal with termites up there?

Not treated, and likely never to be an issue. I worry more about field mice than insects around here. The structure is off the ground so there's no direct contact with soil/moisture.

I honestly hesitated about posting anything about it. I'm not a builder so I'm sure there's plenty to critique. But in reality, it's just going to be a fancy storage shed.

By all means continue posting. I just know that down here termites and powder post beetles can wreak havoc on untreated wood. Your climate is different and I didn’t know if they were really a problem there. And I am nowhere near a builder or contractor, just stuff I’ve picked up along the way. In all reality, if they ever become a concern you can self treat with stuff you can get at a farmers co-op and probably Home Depot or lowes.

Boxing in the insulation the way you did will definitely negate mice making homes in it.

Termites don't seem to be much of an issue around here. We have a contract with an exterminator who sprays every 3 months inside and outside the house and shop. Mainly because my wife hates spiders and earwigs. Even in the shop, which has plenty of gaps, I rarely see insects of any kind.

Over Thanksgiving my brother and I were discussing plans and ideas for next summer's long trail ride. Giant Loop started a sale last Monday. Things...escalated.

Split my cracked case and cleaned all the innards. Then cleaned up a crusty XT head pipe.













My replacement cases still need some cleaning before I can put it together. I'm going to swap the head on my white bike first before I build this engine for the blue bike.

New cases all cleaned up.


Popped the bearings out of the old case halves just to have some spares.



Started putting it back together. Dry fit everything and checked the transmission. 1-6 + N all present and accounted for.



I've got a woodruff key and some lock washers on order so it's set aside for now.
